2020 to be celebrated as Sri Lanka and Oman Friendship Year: Envoy

21 Nov 2019

Muscat – The Embassy of Sri Lanka is planning to observe 2020 as ‘Sri Lanka-Oman Friendship Year’ to celebrate 50 years of Oman’s Blessed Renaissance and enhance people-to-people contact.

The embassy will organise a series of events next year, providing an opportunity for people of Sri Lanka and Oman to jointly celebrate the march of Blessed Renaissance.  In an interaction at the Muscat Daily office, H E O.L. Ameer Ajwad, Sri Lankan Ambassador to Oman, said, “It will be an occasion to get together and share solidarity with the friendly people of Oman.”

To better facilitate communication with the Sri Lankan community, H E Ajwad said that he is focusing more on use of social media platforms as well as establishing a new hotline.  “We have launched several modes of communication at the embassy including a hotline and other social media channels, details of which have been circulated among the community.

“The purpose is primarily to engage them so that their problems can be understood better, seek suggestions and proposals to enhance our relationship. We also aim to boost more tourism in Sri Lanka.” On the issue of housemaids,  H E Ajwad added, “We have a labour division that looks into the interest of migrant workers. Most of the Sri Lankan housemaids are happy and I get testimonies from many of my Omani colleagues. Of course there is a small percentage of problems and we do look into their issues sincerely.

“We have a safe house and made arrangements to rent a new villa where we have accommodated those in trouble. They can always contact us directly and we are ready to assist. I urge Sri Lankans to register with the embassy to maintain database.”
