Remembering Sultan Qaboos

On Saturday (January 11), we sat in front of the TV watching the funeral of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos. My 75 year old mother and 14 year old daughter were with us - three generations who have witnessed a different era of the development in Oman under the leadership of His Majesty. I was born in 1970 in a small village in Ibra, the luckiest among my siblings as I was born in a hospital and went to school when I was five. My mother still remembers the hard times before His Majesty became the Sultan of Oman. When I finished school, I joined Sultan Qaboos University where I have been working as a doctor for the past 25 years. His Majesty was a great leader who will be remembered as a father to all of us and as a peacekeeper who shaped the unique personality of the Omani people.

His Majesty Sultan Qaboos was loved by all in Oman and his relationship with neighbouring countries and the rest of the world was one of non-interference and close friendships. In his 50 years of leadership, he cared for his people improving their lives and bringing peace to the country.
His Majesty transformed a country with very few schools, hospitals and roads to many schools, colleges and universities. Citizens’ living standards have remarkably improved and a good working environment has been created for Omanis and expatriates alike. Oman’s tolerance towards different religions and our internal security are second to none. His Majesty Sultan Qaboos will be remembered as a leader who cared for his people while being a peacemaker and negotiator working for peace in the world.

We grew up calling our Sultan ‘Baba Qaboos’. The father image came before the leader’s image. He was our father, teacher and leader!
As a girl, I grew up seeing images of Sultan Qaboos standing with other female students observing their work in class or women employees at work. He taught us from a young age that we are VALUABLE. We grew up to BELIEVE it and we are now LIVING it, thanks to him.
We have been given opportunities in every field without restrictions; that’s how our role model wanted us to move forward.
It’s those images from my childhood where I saw Sultan Qaboos support Omani women that gave me hope, ambition and courage. It pushed me to strive for my dream of being the first female Omani to reach the highest peak in the world. I pay my sincere condolences on the very sad demise of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said to the people of Oman. We mourn the passing of His Majesty who will forever remain a role model for wisdom, humanity and integrity. May the great leader’s legacy live forever.

Let us always remember the Late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and his wisdom. Even in sickness and pain he put his country first. He was buried in a simple way as just another Omani would have been buried.
No wait for other heads of states to visit. No military parade function. No 21-gun salute, etc. Buried in a simple grave!
Even in death, he delivered the message of simplicity to the whole world. He came for his people, he went away for his people! So many countries in the world declared a state of mourning and flags were flown at half mast. What a way to show the other world leaders how to live in peace, love, understanding, compassion, tolerance and respect.
Heads of states who do not even speak to each other all came to offer condolences for the Late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos.
Although, you have left us but forever you will remain in our hearts, souls and mind. May Allah rest his soul in eternal peace. May Allah open for him Jannat ul Firdaus. Ameen.

It is impossible to overstate the impact His Majesty Sultan Qaboos has had on Oman and its people. There are not many people on this God’s earth given the task of leading a nation to its rebirth. His Majesty Sultan Qaboos focused on the development of the country’s most valuable resource – its people – by providing them with great educational and career opportunities and hugely improved health facilities.
When a father loves his children, they grow up to be well-balanced, happy and caring individuals. When a leader loves his people, as His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, the father of the nation, has done, the result is a population of peaceful, happy and caring people. His Majesty has unified the country through communications and infrastructure but also through his inspiring example of treating all his citizens equally. His Majesty Sultan Qaboos will forever be remembered as a wise leader, an extraordinary diplomat and the most compassionate of men. By continually retaining neutrality and becoming a well renowned peacemaker on the world stage, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos has raised the country’s profile to become one of the safest, most peace loving nation in the world.
We offer His Majesty Sultan Haitham our best wishes and full support as he takes on the responsibility of continuing His Majesty Sultan Qaboos’ great legacy.
Dr Niren Sachdeva Surgeon,
I don’t know what to write as words fall short when I want to pay a tribute to the world’s great peace icon. Sultan Qaboos was a true leader and a great visionary.
At the very outset, I would like to mention that Sultan Qaboos is and will always remain alive in our hearts and minds, though bodily he may be no more. We shall never forget him, his towering personality, we shall always adore!
Sultan Qaboos has been a true messenger of peace; the entire world shall miss him. We all have a heavy heart today, we have tears in our eyes, we all are very sad...this news has been devastating.
Oman was indeed a ‘One Man Show’, and the credit goes to the great leader Sultan Qaboos, his foresightedness. His vision has made Oman one of the most beautiful countries of the world, bountiful and plentiful!
I have been working in Oman for a long time, and undoubtedly these years have been my life’s most splendid, and I am being honest and candid.
Sultan Qaboos’ efforts have transformed Oman into a real heaven, where tranquility, serenity and peace prevails, and all the best facilities here one avails.
There is kindness, goodness and brotherhood, in Oman; in Oman there are a lot of expatriates, and today Sultan’s passing away... in all hearts, sadness, grief, and lots of pain, it creates.
Sultan Qaboos is a legend, and he shall never be forgotten, he shall always be really missed and be always praised.
And don’t forget friends, he’s looking at us from the skies above, and is always showering on us his blessings, which are priceless and endless!
After Sultan Qaboos passed away, Nizwa’s skies were also crying. There was lot of rain, even the skies were pensive and remorseful, and we can understand their pain. Sultan Qaboos was an emblem of humanity, nicety, very very down to earth, very humble and really noble.
Oman is a country where all Omanis and expatriates, all are given their dues, all are treated fairly, and Sultan Qaboos has initiated these trends, and all expatriates are treated as near and dear friends.
Today our dearest Sultan has left us and we are all shattered, for the great Sultan, the welfare of Oman is all what mattered.
To end it all, I will say that our dearest Sultan Qaboos shall always be missed, be remembered, for he has left his rich legacy behind, his imprints behind, and we shall all walk on the path of peace he has shown us, forever, ever and ever, and we shall never forget you dear Sultan, never, never, never!!

His Majesty Sultan Qaboos was the man that made my country the beautiful country it is today. His wise words and kind heart taught us valuable lessons, all the while creating a place for everyone to feel welcomed and making a community full of kind people. I remember as a kid I have always participated in National Day activities by singing or dancing. I did school projects about him, and now I play the national anthem at school every morning.
His Majesty is always connected with kind words of gratitude and love. Everyone adored him and loved him, and thanked him for the home he has built for us. I am still amazed by how he shaped Oman into a safe place for his citizens and residents because of how much he cared for his people. I am thankful to our Baba Qaboos, his legacy and vision that made Oman the best home to live in.
