Convention centre to come up in Khasab

9 Jun 2021

In a move to boost economic activities and attract investments, the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) in Musandam has opened a tender for building an Exhibition and Convention Centre in the wilayat of Khasab.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Raed bin Mohammed al Shuhi, chairman of the Board of Directors of the OCCI Musandam branch, said, “We appreciate the directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to accelerate and develop the Musandam governorate.

“Building an integrated system in the governorate and transforming Khasab port into a logistic area will help provide more services and facilities to activate the import and export movement and open direct lines for export. The establishment of tourist economic zones will also attract investments to the governorate.”

Shuhi said that the announcement of Mahas as an economic zone was made to boost the growth of small and medium industries and warehousing and support the movement in the Khasab port. It will stimulate the business environment and investment.

“The establishment of a branch of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Khasab will be a huge educational achievement for the Governorate of Musandam. Such moves will boost local economy and support people’s purchasing power,” he added.

“His Majesty the Sultan’s directives to the government to expedite the implementation and operation of the projects and to provide the necessary facilities and present them to investors reflects the serious desire to quickly achieve results on the ground.

“Various parties need to come together and play crucial roles in order to achieve the desired results.”

According to the OCCI in Musandam the contracting companies of first class and above can participate in the tender to build the centre. The last date for submission is July 8, before 12pm.

The OCCI Musandam branch said that the convention centre will boost tourism and commercial activities in the governorate and also place it on the global map of the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) industry.

The project site is spread over 2,000sqm, while the building will be divided into two parts, one of them with an area of 1,000sqm with multi-purpose halls and a rooftop garden. The other section will consist of three floors for office and commercial spaces for rent.

The project will be built in an area close to the OCCI’s branch office in Khasab.

Khasab port

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology said that it is pressing ahead with plans set for the development of the Port of Khasab.

The plans build on tenders launched earlier to manage, operate and develop Khasab port, including aspects related to supplying vessels with fuel, operating piers, connecting the port with global terminals and granting lands for investment in the logistics and small industries’ fields.

The ministry statement indicated that with a view to linking the wilayat of Khasab with the wilayat of Dibba and, to facilitate the movement of citizens and residents within the Governorate of Musandam, the ministry announced a consultative tender to select a route for the Dibba-Lima-Khasab carriageway and to prepare tender documents for project implementation.

In the field of air transport, the Civil Aviation Authority will coordinate with the departments concerned to utilise Khasab Airport for civil-cum-military services after a study, it added.
