Oman’s 15 year old sailor Mohammed al Balushi, who began his campaign in the Windsurfer-Techno 293+ class at the Youth Olympic Games with an encouraging 12th place failed to maintain his momentum and ended overall 21st among the 24 participants on Friday.

Greece’s Alexandros Kalpogiannakis claimed the title at the Club Nautico San Isidro, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The medal race was held after the fleets completed 11 races in the series on Friday. Italy’s Nicolo Renna and Britain’s Finn Hawkins took the silver and bronze respectively. Kalpogiannakis had a total of 23 net points (total 36).

Balushi’s best finish was 12th and the next best was 13th in the third race. Following the disappointment of a DNC (did not start) and a DNF (did not finish) in fourth and fifth races respectively, Balushi could never regain the lost ground despite a fighting 15th in the seventh race.

Two 17th-place finish was followed by a ‘U’ flag disqualification in the penultimate race to make matters worse. And in the medal ranking final race, Balushi came 18th to score a net 203 (total 228) for an overall 21st place.
