Omantel League: Champion Dhofar held by Nasr in Salalah derby

Newly-crowned Omantel League champion Dhofar was held to a goalless draw by its arch-rival Al Nasr in a much-anticipated Salalah derby clash in Salalah on Saturday.

The goalless draw meant that Dhofar, which has already taken an unassailable lead, stretched its lead at the top to 16 points with 56 points while second-placed Al Nasr (40) is now five points ahead of third-placed Saham.

Saham was a 2-1 winner over Al Shabab at home on Friday and the defeat kept Shabab in the drop zone with 20 points.

With only four more matches to go for the conclusion of the 2018-19 league, it is a race against time for Shabab to survive in the top-flight league.

Meanwhile, misery continued for the 2018-19 His Majesty's Cup winner, Sur, as it suffered a 1-3 loss at the hands of Oman to remain in danger zone with only 16 points after the latest defeat. Majees is at the bottom of the table following its latest 0-1 loss to Al Rustaq on Friday.

Al Nahda was at fourth spot (34 points) despite its narrow 0-1 loss to hosts Sohar on Friday while Al Arouba is fifth after it drew 1-1 with Muscat.

Collated 22nd round results: Friday: Oman 3 Sur 1, Saham 2 Al Shabab 1, Al Rustaq 1 Majees 0, Sohar 1 Al Nahda 0; Saturday: Muscat 1 Al Arouba 1, Mirbat 0 Al Suwaiq 2, Dhofar 0 Al Nasr 0.
