A day after its nearest rival for titles, Dhofar [winner of eight titles], was knocked out by first division side, Seeb, in a penalty shootout, Fanja ensured that there was no further upset. And the star player for Fanja was Senegalese striker Ely Cisse, who struck four goals after Ahmed al Hinai opened the scoring. Two of Cisse's goals were off penalty kicks.
Also winning their respective round-of-16 knockout matches on Monday were former three-time champions Sur, Mirbat and Al Musannah.
Hosts Sur was far from impressive in its march to the last-eight stage as it survived a scare from Bidiya before winning 1-0.
There was no such worry for Al Musannah as it beat Yanqul 3-1 at the Sohar Sports Complex while in an all-Dhofar clubs clash, Mirbat got the better of Salalah by a 4-2 margin.
Earlier on Sunday, Seeb's giant-killing spree continued as it knocked out Dhofar, winning 4-3 in a shootout, after the teams were locked 3-3 at the end of extra-time.
Seeb had upset defending champion Al Nasr 2-1 on September 19 in the round-of-32 and with a win over Dhofar, it has sent two heavyweights with a total of 13 titles between them, out of the event.
