Team Oman Air will go into the grand finale of the 2018 Extreme Sailing Series (ESS) in Los Cabos, Mexico, high on confidence after its thrilling victory in the penultimate Act in San Diego, US, last month.

The final Act of the ESS will be held from Thursday and Oman Air is among the frontrunners in the title showdown along with leader Alinghi and second-placed SAP Extreme Sailing Team.

Swiss Alinghi leads the series leaderboard after six Acts with 68 points and is followed by SAP with 65 and Oman Air at 63.

Following a hard-fought nine months of global touring and tough competition, the highly anticipated end of season showdown promises to deliver an edge of your seat finish, with the teams determined on going out with a bang.

Alinghi has taken the top spot in four of this year’s seven events at Muscat (Oman), Barcelona (Spain), Cascais (Portugal) and Cardiff (UK).

For the Omani squad, things seem to be on the up. A tumultuous year with many obstacles to overcome, 2018 has definitely tested the team, but its success in October lit new fires in its bellies.

Oman Air began the year with a podium finish in Muscat and then came second at Riva del Garda (Italy).

Another second place in Barcelona was followed by a fourth-place in Cascais. It then returned on podium with a third-place in Cardiff before its spectacular maiden victory of the season in San Diego.

Phil Robertson and his crew of Pete Greenhalgh, Stewart Dodson, James Wierzbowski and Nasser al Mashari are now pushing for a double whammy win in Los Cabos.

“The competition has been tough,” Robertson said. “We haven’t had the smoothest year and we’ve had a lot of setbacks along the way. San Diego built our confidence though. We now know we have the speed and mental strength to take a win that tight.”

Mashari said, “We showed what we are capable of in San Diego, and we are ready to do it again in Mexico. We will go out, sail the best we can, and we will see how the other results fall.”

Overall standings [after six Acts]: 1 Alinghi (68 ppints), 2 SAP Extreme Sailing Team (65), 3 Oman Air (63), 4 INEOS Rebels UK (54), 5 Red Bull Sailing Team (50), 6 Team México (42).
