Ejaaz claims Muscat Open title

Ahmad Ejaaz of Al Mouj Golf carded a two-day combined gross score of 146 to claim the title at the 47th edition of the Muscat Golf Championship, held at the Ras al Hamra Golf Club (RAHGC), recently.

 The Muscat Golf Championship is the oldest amateur event in the sultanate and this year witnessed a total of 65 players vying for the top honours including the five-time champion and Oman's No 1 amateur Azzan al Rumhi.

Twenty of the 65 golfers arrived from neighbouring countries. On day one, 21 year old Peter Ligaard from RAHGC, played an exceptional round to take a three-shot lead over Ejaaz, with a gross score of 71.

However, Ejaaz fought back with superb round the next day to overtake the young Dane, and win the trophy with a gross score of 146. Later Ejaaz said, “I really enjoyed playing in the Muscat Open this year. I’m extremely proud that I managed to turn the scoring in my favour on the second day., I am looking forward to come back and defend the title next year.”

Ligaard finished second with a gross score of 151, followed by the Al Mouj players - Azzan (154) and Allan Middleton (156). Ed Edwards from Golf Saudi, rounded up the top-five in gross category with 159. The nett category honours was won by Brett Merrell of RAHGC with a score of 145. He was followed by Michael Hall from Al Mouj and Altaf Beg from RAHGC, both with a score of 146 but Hall was second with a better countback score.

Nasaruddin Mohammed with 147 was fourth edging Chris Bell (147) on better countback. Later, at the prize giving ceremony held at the Ras Al Hamra Recreation Club, the Muscat Open organising committee president, Salim al Harthy, thanked the players, organising committee and all the volunteers for their contribution in making the 47th edition of the oldest amateur golf championship a grand success.

Other results: Junior gross winner: Ahmed al Wahaibi (171); best gross (day one): Lynn Casey (80), day two: Faiz Riaz (79); best nett (day one): Roger Frost (71), day two: Salim al Harthy (69).
