2019 ITTF Challenge Plus Oman Open: Yun-Ju bags double

H E Sheikh Saad al Saadi, ITTF and OTTC officials with the winners and runners-up in various categories at the awards ceremony on Sunday

Lin Yun-Ju of Chinese Taipei hogged the limelight on the final day of the 2019 ITTF Challenge Plus Oman Open as he claimed a grand double, winning the men's singles and doubles titles, at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Sunday.

The No 3 seed stunned the top-seeded Mattias Falck of Sweden 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8 to claim the singles crown hours after he and his countrymate Liao Cheng-Ting had won the doubles crown.

It is the first men’s singles title on either the ITTF World Tour or at an ITTF Challenge Series tournament for Yun-Ju.

In the doubles final, Cheng-Ting and Yun-Ju, the top seeds, beat Russian qualifiers, Denis Ivonin and Vladimir Sidorenko 11-8, 11-3, 11-7.

Japanese Hina Hayata, however, denied, a Chinese Taipei singles sweep, as she upset the No 1 seed Cheng I-Ching in the women's singles final, winning 11-3, 11-5, 7-11, 11-9, 11-8.

Also emerging winner in the women's doubles were another Japanese pair of Satsuki Odo and Saki Shibata.

Satsuki and Saki, the No 2 seeds, beat Honoka Hashimoto and Hitomi Sato, the top seeds, in an all-Japanese summit clash 14-12, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6.

Later, H E Sheikh Saad al Saadi, the Minister of Sports Affairs, gave away the awards in the presence of the ITTF president, Thomas Weikert, the ITTF CEO, Steve Dainton, and other top officials of the ITTF and Oman Table Tennis Committee.
