Record title-holder Fanja kept its hopes of a tenth His Majesty's Cup Football Championship crown alive as it edged past last year's runner-up Sohar  on an away-goal rule despite losing the second-leg 0-1 at the ROP Stadium in Muscat on Wednesday.

Sohar’s 1-0 win in its away game was not enough to stop Fanja’s march in the two-legged HM’s Cup quarterfinals as the former champions had won its away leg 3-2 in Sohar last month.

Having scored three away goals, Fanja progressed despite a 3-3 aggregate score.

For Sohar, Said Obaid scored the only goal in the 44th minute after a sloppy show by Fanja goalkeeper let Obaid pounce on the ball to score and raise hopes for his team.

Fanja, which last won its ninth title in 2014, joins Sur, Majees and Mirbat in the semifinals.

Earlier on Wednesday, in a clash that featured former champions, Sur and Seeb, hosts Sur edged past its rival on an away-goal rule after both the teams finished goalless at the Sur Sports Complex.  Seeb and Sur, who have won the title three times each, had played out a 1-1 draw in the first-leg at the Seeb Sports Stadium last month.

Also on Tuesday night, unfancied Majees caused a big upset as it knocked out four-time winners Al Arouba. Having won the first-leg at home by a solitary goal, Majees held hosts Arouba to a goalless draw to win the tie 1-0 on aggregate. The Batinah Club, which returned to the Omantel League earlier this year, has impressed in recent times under the leadership of former star Al Tayyeb Abdul Nour.
