Oman receives 187,000 cruise tourists

Muscat -

Cruise ships brought 187,000 tourists to the sultanate until May, an increase of 48 per cent compared to the same period of 2018, stated the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).

As per NCSI, top five nationalities comprised Germans (68,976), Britons (21,886), Italians (16,274), Spanish (10,341) and Americans (8,264).

The Ministry of Tourism plays a major role in the development of the sector to promote the sultanate as a destination for cruise ships, in coordination with the government agencies and private sector companies.

It also coordinates with cruise ship operators by providing facilities, permits and holding promotional campaigns.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications recently granted the right to manage and operate the Khasab and Shinas ports to Marafi Company of the Oman Global Logistics Group (Asyad). This was in line with the government’s strategy to develop Omani ports. The Ministry of Transport and Communications seeks to promote and develop the logistics sector in a sustainable and integrated manner and implement plans to improve and enhance the administrative, regulatory and operational efficiency of the ports in the country.

There is a plan to work on the development of some ports like Sohar, Sur, Duqm and Suwaiq to be used for receiving cruise ships.
