Oman Munition Production Company opens factory in Samail

Muscat -

The Oman Munition Production Company marked the official opening of its light weapons production plant on Wednesday. The ceremony was held under the patronage of H E Sayyid Badr bin Saud bin Harib al Busaidi, Minister Responsible for Defence Affairs, at the factory’s headquarters in the wilayat of Samail in Dakhliyah.

The opening ceremony was attended by a number of dignitaries, ministers, commanders of the Sultan’s Armed Forces (SAF), officials from the military and security forces. H E Busaidi along with the other attendees toured the facility to identify the different stages of production. H E Busaidi was also presented a commemorative gift on the occasion by Mohammed bin Nasser al Rasbi, secretary general in the Ministry of Defence and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Oman Munition Production Company.

The project aims at meeting the light ammunition needs of SAF, the military and security departments in Oman. Established as per the directives of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, the plant is the first-of-its-kind in Oman and its foundation stone was laid on March 26, 2015.

The initial production operations started in late 2016. Manurhin, a French company, was contracted as a strategic partner for the manufacture of the necessary equipment for this project, one of the most vital and latest projects of its kind in Oman.

It is equipped with the latest techniques and designed according to the highest international standards. A number of higher diploma graduates were enrolled in an integrated training programme at a local institution for recruitment as technical and administrative staff in the plant. They were also sent abroad to attend specialised technical courses.

The plant will further contribute to opening up new avenues for the Omani industry, by providing opportunities for small and medium enterprises, jobs and technical expertise to Omanis.
