Muscat-wide campaign to eradicate dengue-carrying mosquito from tomorrow

The Ministry of Health (MoH) in collaboration with Muscat Municipality and relevant stakeholders, will launch on Monday a Muscat-wide campaign for Aedes aegypti elimination under the theme, ‘Your Cooperation Indicates Your Awareness’. The campaign will be held from January 8 to 21.

The launching ceremony will be held under the auspices of H E Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Obaid al Sa’eedi, Minister of Health, at Majlis al Sayyida Fatima bint Ali Mosque in North Al Hail. Aedes aegypti is the principal vector of the dengue virus. The campaign is being organised with the purpose of eliminating Aedes aegypti following cases of dengue fever in Muscat governorate.

The ministry and the municipality, with the cooperation of walis’ offices as well as volunteers, have finalised the preparations for conducting the campaign in the governorate’s wilayats. The authorities have set up plans, made provision for all necessary resources, and trained field teams that will visit some households in Seeb, Bausher and Muttrah.

To fulfil the objective of the campaign, the Ministry of Health and the Muscat Municipality have called upon all citizens and residents to play an active role in destroying breeding sites of Aedes aegypti . Moreover, the ministry and the municipality have stated that people should seek information from reliable sources and ignore rumours. Citizens and residents can communicate with the Ministry of Health’s Contact Centre and the Muscat Municipality Contact Centre for any queries.

Aedes aegypti is the primary vector responsible for transmitting viruses such as Zika, dengue and chikungunya. It dwells in urban places and feeds during daylight.
