Iran, Pakistan to conduct drills in Strait of Hormuz

Muscat -

Iranian and Pakistani warships will conduct a series of military exercises in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, according to international media reports.

Details provided by agencies stated that Pakistani surface vessels and submarines had recently docked in the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, ahead of manoeuvres in eastern parts of the narrow strait which separates Iran from Oman's Musandam Peninsula. The exercise’s aim is to promote military cooperation between the two countries.

“The most important activity of the Pakistani fleet during its stay in Bandar Abbas is to conduct joint manoeuvres with selected units of Iran's navy in eastern waters of the Strait of Hormuz,” said Rear Admiral Shahram Irani, quoted by Iran's state news agency.

Last week an oil tanker was fired upon by suspected pirates while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, amid further reports of suspicious activity by small craft approaching shipping  vessels elsewhere in the strait and Sea of Oman.
