“The complexes, one in Halban in Muscat governorate and another in North Batinah governorate in Sohar, will facilitate the work of the special forces unit, entrusted with guarding diplomatic missions and managing security for events organised by government departments,” an ROP statement said. “The unit is well equipped and its cadres have been trained to perform specialised tasks.”
The ROP patrol department, also part of the special forces unit, provided 3,400 services related to crimes involving drug smuggling and illegal immigration all over the sultanate in 2010, according to the statement. Established in 1999 in the governorate of Muscat and later in the governorates of Dhofar, Buraimi, South and North Batinah, the unit is entrusted with moving to crime scenes and providing support to police stations.
The women's special forces unit plays an important role in maintaining security, especially with the increasing demand for female police officers. It was launched in 2002 to assist different ROP units and departments. Several batches of new recruits were added to the forces in the last few years.
The women's special forces are also attached to VIP security units. Candidates are trained in conducting raids, carrying out arrests, scaling high buildings and parachuting.
